New Study Finds That ELLs Tend To Have Better Problem-Solving Skills & “Internal Assets” Than English-Proficient Students

 

As most teachers of English Language Learners already know, most have a huge number of assets – they just don’t know English yet.

A new study reinforces what we already know. Resilience and traumatic stress among Latinx english language learners: a cross-sectional study of students from an urban school district (not behind a paywall)  finds that ELLs tend to have more “internal assets,” which they define as “self-efficacy, empathy, problem solving, and self-awareness,” than non ELL students.
